Darling Sophanista, welcome to Wanderlust Spain.
When the Moors ruled Spain there was a harmony of the three major religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Moorish royalty would construct their palaces paying attention to all three: using the green color for Islam (the color associated with paradise) they constructed tile walls with patterns of Stars of David, or the iron window grills pictured here.
When I first saw this cross I was struck by how the hand made gold looked raw in its cut, like the aluminum amulets used by the Christians to ask for Saints to intervene for healing- if one's leg hurts, one takes a leg amulet to the church to ask for help in easing pain.
I wanted to create an earring that was an homage to that same harmony of religious observance of that era in Spanish history- the swirls of the Greek gold reminded me of the patterns on the palace walls, with the life giving color of green, and the raw, handmade gold.
From the clicks on the cobblestones, the aromas of paella, to the swirls of Moorish castles and the OLÈ of Flamenco dancers… YOU were on this Spanish adventure with me, darling Sophanista. This collection gathers elements of Malaga and Seville, from jaw dropping antique stores, quiet street vendors, and pieces that remind us of that magnificent adventure.
Thank you, darling Sophanista.
